CCDC Now Hiring Mental Health Professional

Mental Health Professional (MHP) Job Description with CCDC:

Position Requirements:
Must be a licensed Psychologist, Professional Counselor, Clinical Social Worker, or Registered Nurse. Must hold and maintain a current, unrestricted license in the state of employment, as well as a valid CPR card. A minimum of 3 years’ clinical experience in a mental health care setting is required, with correctional healthcare experience preferred. Must have knowledge and experience in the identification and treatment of mental health and co-occurring substance abuse disorders, discharge planning, principles of social work, basic principles of individual and group behavior, suicide risk assessment, crisis de-escalation techniques, and a working knowledge of psychotropic medications.

Status:

Full time, Part time, PRN, Exempt, Non-exempt

Mental Health Director, Health Services Administrator (HSA), Corporate Mental Health Director

Physical Demands:

Must have the physical and mental capacity to work in an environment that may be less than pristine, and manage and maintain physical and mental health when encountering stressful situations.

Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Mental Health Director, Health Services Administrator (HSA), and Corporate Mental Health Director, the Mental Health Professional (MHP) is responsible for providing mental health care within the scope of their license in the facility.
Performance

Expectations:
A. Use knowledge and expertise to ensure that processes and systems are followed appropriately according to policies and procedures, company performance, and accreditation standards.
B. Work cohesively with the Mental Health Director, HSA, Social Services Director (when present), and psychiatric provider(s) in the coordination of the mental health care delivery system, as well as other functions within the facility.
C. Use all functions and applications of TechCare™ relevant to the position with no supervision, and assist with staff training as requested.
D. Communicate effectively with clients, peers, and employees at all levels within the organization. Maintain clear lines of communication throughout issue-resolution processes.
E. Demonstrate personal performance based on professional practice standards, relevant statutes, rules and regulations, and organizational criteria.
F. Demonstrate professionalism by using objectivity, maintaining self-control when under pressure, separating professional from personal issues, displaying emotional maturity, maintaining a high degree of integrity, and promoting a positive work environment by setting an example.
G. Participate in all monthly, quarterly, and annual meetings as assigned and required in accordance with contract compliance.
H. Relay critical information to the next level of management that may have a negative impact on client and/or vendor relations or patient care.
I. Evaluate patients in a variety of settings, including the initial intake area, mental health care unit, emergency situations, housing units, medical housing areas, and segregation units.
J. Participate in educational and training activities related to mental health care for patients, security personnel, and healthcare staff.
K. Assist with evaluating the quality and effectiveness of the mental health services and assist in developing systems to ensure and monitor patient care and safety.
L. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to refer for appropriate care, based on the physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patient(s) served.
M. Coordinate with healthcare and security staff regarding patients’ mental health care and release dates and ensure an effective discharge summary plan is documented within the patient’s health record.
N. Participate in a collaborative approach of patient management using the knowledge and clinical resources of the health care staff to provide the resolution of diagnostic and therapeutic problems and the implementation of effective solutions.
O. Perform and document mental health evaluations, progress notes, individual and group counseling notes, and suicide watch notes in TechCare™ in a thorough manner that relays a clear picture of the patient for the next clinician who interacts with the patient. Report all significant changes in patient condition to higher level mental health staff for appropriate intervention.
P. Facilitate patient treatment according to company policies and procedures to include, but not limited to, admission and discharge from the mental health unit,
housing change requests, seclusion, suicide precautions, close observation, and observation level changes.
Q. Demonstrate knowledge of DSM-V criteria with appropriate intervention.
R. Conduct group and/or individual counseling for patients, as applicable.
S. Complete at least 12 hours of CEU pertinent to correctional health care annually.

Harm Reduction in the Valley

In the Spring of 2017, Southern Nevada began its first comprehensive harm reduction needle exchange program, also known as Syringe Service Programs (SSPs), ‘Impact Exchange.’  This followed the passage of Senate Bill (SB) 410, which decriminalized needles, and similar programs in Northern Nevada.  Syringe vending machines have been used as an infectious disease intervention with PWID (People Who Inject Drugs) in Europe and Australia, among others, for over a decade.  “The prescription opioid and heroin epidemics are devastating families and communities throughout the nation, and the potential for new HIV outbreaks is of growing concern. Our goal is for people to live long enough to stop substance use and not contract HIV or other serious infections while injecting – SSPs can help people accomplish both.”Tom Frieden, M.D., MPH, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Proponents of the bill argued that needle exchange programs would greatly reduce Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV risk among PWID.  According to estimates from the CDC National Prevention Information Network, the lifetime cost of care for Hepatitis C is $500,000, and the lifetime cost of care for HIV begins at $355,000.

In Clark County, it is estimated that about 9% of new HIV diagnoses occur among PWID.  The practice of sharing needles is higher among younger PWID, and recent statistics show that the percentage of Whites who are starting to use injection drugs has increased by 114%.  According to the CDC, in 2015, just one in four injection drug users reported receiving their injection supplies from sterile sources.  Nationally, up to 70% of Hepatitis C infections are contracted through injection drug use.

The program, which involves a needle exchange program and pilot vending machine program, is the result of a partnership between Southern Nevada Health District, Harm Reduction Center- Las Vegas, and the Nevada Aids Research and Education Society (NARES).  People using the needle exchange vending machines are required to register at Trac-B Exchange, as well as with Trac-B Exchange’s service providers.  Community members may receive up to two boxes per week.  Each box contains items needed to reduce the risk of bloodborne infections.

In addition to providing PWID with access to sterile needles and syringes, and facilitating the safe disposal of used needles and syringes, this program opens the door to other types of services and care for community members.

Says Brandon Delise, an Epidemiologist with Southern Nevada Health District, “Each year since 2008, more Clark County residents have died from opioid overdoses than from firearms or motor vehicle traffic accidents. Additionally, Clark County has seen a rise in rate of fatal fentanyl overdoses from 2015 to 2016 but a decrease in rate of fatal prescription opioid overdoses during the same time period. Preventive and harm reduction programs, like syringe vending machines, have been integral in responding to the opioid epidemic by allowing people to protect themselves against blood-borne pathogens through the distribution of both disease prevention items and critical information about infectious diseases.  For further details, please refer to the Nevada Online Opioid Dashboard (https://opioid.snhd.org/).”

Vending Machines:
Community members may access the vending machine twice in a 7 day period and must register with AFAN if not already registered with Huntridge Family Clinic or Trac-B.  The vending machine is available during business hours of Monday –Friday from 8 am-5 pm.

Free rapid HIV testing is offered via an appointment made over the phone or on a walk-in basis.  Testing stops at 4:30 pm.

POSITION: Prevention Specialist (P/T) – 20-25 hours per week
Salary: $18/hour – includes vacation and sick pay, no medical benefits
SUMMARY: Seeking highly organized individual for Prevention Specialist position to provide education about substance abuse prevention to various community audiences, manage special projects and events, and represent JTNN through numerous community activities. Must possess a high level of professionalism, good planning and organizational skills, well developed interpersonal and communication skills, and a professional appearance.
RESPONSIBILITIES
 Develop content and deliver educational presentations to audiences such as, but not limited to: professional associations; healthcare personnel; school administrators; college students; and local business owners on topics such as prevention, underage drinking, addictive drugs, and JTNN committee work.
 Coordinate/attend/participate in community meetings/events to share knowledge and resources, collect data, and build or strengthen community partnerships with local leaders and stakeholders.
 Provide support for agency education events and/or fundraisers such as developing an agenda, organizing an attendance lists, and providing onsite event management.
 Facilitate committee meetings, organize task forces, and prepare typed minutes.
 Prepare and submit quarterly grant reports.
 Mentor and supervise interns.
 Other project-related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
 Bachelor’s degree
 Background in prevention, education, collaboration or program development preferred.
 Ability to demonstrate skills in problem solving, coordination of activities and events, and verbal and written communication with key stakeholders.
 Ability to speak to large groups and facilitate conversations about complex topics.
 Working understanding of drug and alcohol prevention, intervention and treatment, and local culture or the willingness to learn.

Must be able to lift or move up to 20 pounds for short distances.
